Emma Watson calls out clickbait, shuts down engagement and retirement rumours

Emma Watson is standing up to recent rumours that have been published about her, calling out clickbait culture and setting the record straight.
The 31-year-old actor took to social media this week to address recent reports that she’s engaged and retiring. “Dear Fans, Rumours about whether I’m engaged or not, or whether my career is ‘dormant or not’ are ways to create clicks each time they are revealed to be true or untrue,” she wrote in a series of tweets.
“If I have news - I promise I’ll share it with you,” she continued in the second post on May 17, spilling the real tea to her nearly 30 million followers.
“In the meantime please assume no news from me just means I’m quietly spending the pandemic the way most people are - failing to make sourdough bread (!), caring for my loved ones and doing my best not to spread a virus that is still affecting so many people,” she continued.
Watson then signed off by wishing her fans love during these “strange times” and by thanking everyone who is “working so hard” to keep others safe.
The tweets mark the first time that Watson has shared anything on the platform since August 2020, when she used her account to amplify Black voices following the murder of George Floyd.
You can’t blame the former Harry Potter star for speaking up. The spectacle all started a couple of months ago when The Daily Mail published an article saying that Watson had gone “dormant” and was giving up her craft. The publication also revealed Leo Robinton was her “rumoured fiancé” and that he was a part of the reason she was stepping away from acting.
Fans quickly shared their disappointment over Watson’s supposed retirement online, which makes sense since she’s had a streak of notable roles since shooting to popularity as Hermione Granger. In recent years Watson’s gigs have included a part in Greta Gerwig’s Little Women (she played Meg) and the role of Belle in the 2017 live-action blockbuster Beauty and the Beast.
“Emma's social media accounts are dormant but her career isn't,” Watson’s manager Jason Weinberg also confirmed to Entertainment Weekly at the end of February.
At least now people can rest assured that they’ll probably see Watson on the big screen again sometime soon. For now, don’t be surprised if more pictures of her and Robinton (an L.A. businessman) surface. The couple have been keeping a low profile ever since they were first romantically linked in October 2019, but once in a while confirmation of the continued coupledom surfaces.
