Earlier this week, shocking video of a physical altercation between rappers Quavo and Saweetie was obtained by TMZ. Dating the video from sometime in November of 2020, when the pair were in a relationship (they have since gone their separate ways), the CCTV footage from an elevator in Hollywood shows the pair struggling with each other and an orange video game console before they enter the elevator, and shows the entirety of the elevator ride, where Saweetie appears injured on the floor. When they leave, Saweetie is seen limping out.

Now TMZ is reporting that the elevator fight is under investigation by the LAPD, where both parties could be at fault and possibly facing charges.

Sources close to the LAPD have told the outlet that law enforcement has seen the video and want to speak with both the Migos rapper and the “Best Friend” rapper separately to fill in the gaps of how the altercation occurred, and what happened before the CCTV captured them fighting.

The law enforcement sources also say that this could be a case of domestic violence where both parties could be considered at fault, however at press time neither has been charged with any crimes.

Saweetie's spokesperson released a statement on the "Tap In" rapper's behalf on Thursday. “This unfortunate incident happened a year ago, while we have reconciled since then and moved past this particular disagreement, there were simply too many other hurdles to overcome in our relationship and we have both since moved on,” the statement read. “I kindly ask that everyone respect my privacy during this time.”

Quavo, who has not spoken publicly about the footage, had previously shown support for women’s shelters and women escaping abusive relationships in his collaboration with Justin Bieber for the music video “Intentions.”

Saweetie has also used her music in this manner, in her case to speak about the ways that men who claim to support women’s rights are often using that as a shield to mask their toxic masculinity. In her music video for “Best Friend,” a collab with Doja Cat, the pair is seen telepathically thinking, “That kind of crass virtue signalling is nothing but a less overtly nefarious form of toxic masculinity.”

Quavo and Saweetie began dating in 2018 but after rumours of Quavo’s infidelity abounded, Saweetie confirmed their split in March of this year, tweeting details that suggest he cheated on her.

“I’m single,” she tweeted on March 19th. “I’ve endured too much betrayal and hurt behind the scenes for a false narrative to be circulating that degrades my character. Presents don’t band aid scars and the love isn’t real when the intimacy is given to other women.”

She continued, “I emotionally checked out a long time ago and have walked away with a deep sense of peace and freedom. Excited for this new chapter of elevation.”

Quavo then responded the same day, also on Twitter.

“I know you want to make this into a show so I’ll play my part just this one time. I don’t normally put my business out there, especially my personal life. I feel the need to address this so there are no false narratives.”

He continued, “I had love for you and disappointed you did all that. You are not the woman I thought you were. I wish you nothing but the best.”

Saweetie then quote-tweeted his goodbye, adding a “take care.”

TMZ is reporting that should this matter escalate, it could go to the LA City Attorney to review for possible charges.
