Messages of condolence have been pouring in from across the globe following the death of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh last Friday but the latest one comes from inside the royal family. Princess Eugenie, Philip’s granddaughter, shared a photo of herself, her sister Beatrice, and the Duke on Instagram earlier today, addressing him as her “dearest grandpa” and including a note detailing all the ways that she and the rest of the British monarchy will remember the 99-year-old royal.

“Dearest Grandpa,⁣” wrote Eugenie, “We all miss you. ⁣You would be so touched by all the tributes that have been shared with me the past few days. ⁣People remember sitting next to you at a dinner, or shaking your hand once, who remember you saying hello in passing, or remember how much their DofE award meant to them,” she added, referencing the youth awards program that Philip launched back in 1956 which has since grown to include more than 130 countries, including Canada.

Eugenie’s post was accompanied by a second photo, showing her as a child being patted on the head by her grandfather. The princess also wrote about her own memories of Philip, which were personal for both grandfather and granddaughter. “I remember learning how to cook, how to paint, what to read. I remember laughing at your jokes and asking about your spectacular life and service in the navy,” she shared. ⁣”I remember incinerating the sausages and you swooping in to save the day.⁣ I remember your hands and your laugh and your favourite beer. (An ale from the now-defunct Boddington’s Brewery in Manchester, FYI.) ⁣

Eugenie ended her note saying, “I will remember you in your children, your grandchildren and great grandchildren. ⁣Thank you for your dedication and love for us all and especially Granny, who we will look after for you. ⁣With all my love Eugenie”

In February, Princess Eugenie and her husband Jack Brooksbank welcomed a son and honoured her grandfather by giving the new baby the middle name Philip. “He is named after his great grandfather and both of his great x5 grandfathers," wrote Eugenie on Instagram stories, as she and Brooksbank introduced their son, August Philip Hawke.

Earlier in the week, Prince William also used Instagram to remember his grandfather, sharing a photo of his son Prince George and Philip on the Kensington Royal account. “I will never take for granted the special memories my children will always have of their great-grandpa coming to collect them in his carriage and seeing for themselves his infectious sense of adventure as well as his mischievous sense of humour,” wrote William.
