Chrissy Teigen has been a Twitter power-user for years: providing epic commentary on events of the day, clapping back at trolls, sharing important (and sometimes devastating) news from her and husband John Legend’s life, and even providing lighter moments like her new fav recipe or being the source of the most cringeworthy meme the internet has ever seen. Basically, she was our Twitter president.

But it seems she has had enough, because she just pulled the plug on her account with over 13.7 million followers, completely deactivating and deleting her verified presence on the platform.

Writing in a long thread last night, she explained her reasoning. “Hey. For over 10 years, you guys have been my world. I honestly owe so much to this world we have created here. I truly consider so many of you my actual friends.”

She continued, “But it’s time for me to say goodbye. This no longer serves me as positively as it serves me negatively, and I think that’s the right time to call something.”

In the seven subsequent tweets in the thread, she explained, that, “I’ve always been portrayed as the strong clap back girl but I’m just not,” adding, “ My desire to be liked and fear of pissing people off has made me somebody you didn’t sign up for, and a different human than I started out here as!”

Reminding her followers that, “your words matter,” she said the trolls with only 2 followers who sent her virtual “punches” have left her “deeply bruised.”

“I have made my mistakes, throughout years and in front of hundreds of thousands, and been held accountable for them. I’ve learned an incredible amount here,” she continued.

“But one thing I haven’t learned is how to block out the negativity.”

She capped off her statement with, “But I love you guys and I cherish our time together, I truly do. I also hate you. <3”

Then her account went dark.

Her departure has divided Twitter, many of whom are coming to her defence, reminding others that she only ever wanted to share recipes (and her 90 Day Fiancé opinions) with the world and she was bullied off the platform.

Yet there are some others who are criticizing Chrissy, saying that she’ll be fine because of her wealth and doesn’t require our pity or sympathy.

As some users noted, this isn’t the first time Chrissy has announced her departure from the platform only to return. In May of last year, she made her account private and said she needed to take a break from Twitter and then returned the next day.

In October, after suffering a devastating miscarriage (the emotions of which she documented on Twitter), she was absent from the platform for more than a week.  Thankfully, she hasn’t deleted her official Instagram, which has over 34 million followers, so we can still get our John/Chrissy/Luna/Miles fix when we require it.

TBH Twitter won’t be the same without her, and we are def gonna miss her sassy brand of commentary, but we gotta respect her choice to call it a day. And if you do follow her on Instagram, make sure to take care with your words in the comment section. As Chrissy said, words matter.
