Oprah Winfrey’s interview with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle lived up to its bombshell promises on Sunday night, delivering two of the most riveting, eye-opening, disturbing and inspiring hours of television this year. The silenced couple were finally given a space to speak their truth and did so in an effort to correct the false narrative that has been perpetrated around them for years. Plus, we really missed seeing Oprah on TV.
The exclusive sit-down with Harry and Meghan featured no shortage of shocking revelations, with the couple correcting several news stories that were designed to damage their reputation. From Meghan making Kate cry days before her wedding to Harry (it was Meghan who actually did the crying), to the couple blindsiding the Queen with their decision to step down as senior full-time members of the Royal family (her majesty had known for months), Oprah’s safe space allowed the couple the chance to speak freely in a way that was not possible while inside the Firm.
Meghan and Harry also revealed just how bad things were behind closed doors, including conversations about their future children’s skin colour, a complete lack of mental health resources for Meghan after she revealed she was contemplating suicide, the denial of any royal title for Archie and the removal of a security detail for the family.
Following Sunday’s interview, #Meghan and #AbolishTheMonarchy began trending on Twitter. Many voiced their support for Harry and Meghan, praised Oprah, and pointed out that no one should be shocked that an institution with a history of colonialism and slavery continues to hold racist ideals.
Meghan’s close friend Serena Williams defended Markle on Twitter and was joined by several other notable names, including Bernice King, Maria Shriver, Nina Parker, Michael Moore, Meena Harris, Billie Jean King, Amanda Gorman, Sarah Silverman, and Gabrielle Union.
Social media was buzzing with comments from around the world as viewers took in more information on the Royal family in one sitting than has possibly ever been shared before from the tightly protected institution.
Of course, not everyone was a fan of Meghan and Harry’s interview with Oprah. We can always count on Piers Morgan to be the worst.
Real Housewife and Skinny Girl Vodka creator Bethenny Frankel tweeted her thoughts before watching Oprah’s interview, which is like giving a book report before reading the book. That’s how you fail Grade 9 English.
On Monday morning, Winfrey appeared on CBS This Morning with her best friend Gayle King to share additional clips from the interview, which Winfrey said actually lasted more than three hours. We’re a year into lockdown, Oprah. We would have watched the entire thing! In one clip, Meghan and Oprah speak about Markle’s relationship with her father and half-sister, who both famously spoke to the tabloids about the Duchess.
In two more clips of the couple together, Meghan and Harry talked about the difference between the tabloids' treatment of Meghan, which was largely based on race, compared to that of other members of the Royal family. Harry also spoke to the toxicity of the world the Royal family is trapped within, adding that he feels his father Prince Charles has made peace with the situation.
During her appearance on CBS This Morning, Winfrey also confirmed that Prince Harry told her explicitly that the conversation about his future child’s race did not take place with his grandparents. So, let the awful guessing game continue.
