The Weeknd has become very cinematic when it comes to his performances, leaving us guessing about what we're going to see every single time. Will he show up with full-face bandages and his red jacket? Will he debut a new face as he did in his “Save Your Tears” music video? What will he look like at the upcoming Super Bowl halftime show? We have so many questions.

The Canadian singer first sported a bruised face for his After Hours short film and following his “Blinding Lights” music video. Since then, he's continued to wear the same red suit jacket and marked up face throughout his performances, including Saturday Night Live, 2020 MTV Video Music Awards and the 2020 American Music Awards.

Fans couldn’t help but wonder if The Weeknd, whose real name is Abel Tesfaye, will continue to don the same beat-up style or if he will introduce a new character at the Super Bowl LV halftime show.

Ahead of his performance, The Weeknd finally revealed the answer to why he’s been sporting the full-face bandages. He spoke to Variety and shared that the bandages reflect Hollywood celebrities and their love for plastic surgery.

“The significance of the entire head bandages is reflecting on the absurd culture of Hollywood celebrity and people manipulating themselves for superficial reasons to please and be validated,” The Weeknd revealed.

He previously said that his character stems from a bad night in Las Vegas. Now, he said that the bandages fit into that storyline because “it’s all a progression.” He continued, “We watch the character’s storyline hit heightened levels of danger and absurdity as his tale goes on.” We think it’s safe to say that this character will be going to extreme levels at the halftime show.

The “In Your Eyes” singer is promoting one of his biggest albums while he looks almost unrecognizable. He said that we should take that as “being attractive isn’t important to me, but a compelling narrative is.”

To promote his highly-anticipated performance, the 30-year-old singer stars in a new Pepsi commercial titled “The Walk.” It features The Weeknd walking down the tunnel towards the halftime stage as videos from his career screen on the walls. La Mar Taylor narrates the 30-second commercial. “Our stories are a lifetime in the making. We give to the world, and the world gives back,” Taylor says. “What we create changes us. Every performance a new chapter. Every stage a new beginning.”

As the “Blinding Lights” singer reaches the end of the tunnel, he takes a deep breath and makes his way to the stage, giving us all the goosebumps. We’re so ready for this performance.

The Weeknd, who takes the Super Bowl stage on Sunday, February 7 at the Raymond James Stadium in Tampa Bay, recently revealed that he shelled out $7 million of his own money to help make his performance epic. That comes on top of the usual production costs covered by NFL organizers.

The singer revealed the news to Billboard and explained why he's so invested in the performance.  “We’ve been really focusing on dialing in on the fans at home and making performances a cinematic experience, and we want to do that with the Super Bowl,” The Weeknd said.

In his first statement about his performance, The Weeknd said, "We all grow up watching the world's biggest acts playing the Super Bowl and one can only dream of being in that position. I'm humbled, honoured and ecstatic to be the center of that infamous stage this year."

Sunday's haltime show will mark the first time a Canadian artist takes the Super Bowl stage since Shania Twain in 2003.
