During the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, many of us have picked up some new hobbies like knitting, reading, virtual workouts or getting a puppy to make our days brighter and sharing puppy content to spread the joy. But even celebrities have had to find new ways to keep themselves entertained, including Schitt’s Creek star Annie Murphy.

Annie, best known for playing Alexis Rose in the emmy-winning series, has fallen in love with Nintendo Switch, and she can’t stop talking about Just Dance 2021. We had the chance to virtually chat with Annie, the new face of Nintendo Switch, and she told us all about the Mario Party tournaments she’s hoping to arrange with her Schitt’s Creek cast (after we gave her the idea).

Through her partnership with the gaming brand, Annie filmed a commercial alongside her mom (no, not Moira Rose) and showed off her best dancing skills. Annie revealed that Nintendo asked her if she wanted to cast someone to play her mom or have her real mom show off her acting chops. “She said there’s only one person that will be Annie’s mom, and that is Annie’s mom. So we ran her lines the night before just to get the jitters out, and I think she nailed it,” Annie said.

"I’m a complete grandfather when it comes to technology and figuring things out, but it was very simple,” she said of the console, explaining that she was a little uneasy to get into it before, but it's become a new go-to activity.

She continued, “We’ve been living one big rainy day for the last kind of 10 months, and having this Nintendo Switch has honestly provided me with so much entertainment, whether it’s a Mario Kart binge or it’s actually, god forbid, getting off the couch and moving around with the Ring Fit Adventure, or with Just Dance 2021, which is a favourite because I am not coordinated nor are any of my friends. It’s kind of like going to watch karaoke to watch people fail miserable, which is one of my favourite things to do.”

When we asked if Annie thinks that the growth we see in Alexis throughout the seasons of Schitt’s Creek is comparable to the evolution of all the different Nintendo consoles over the years, she said, “well, there’s a question for ya.”

“Yeah, there’s definitely a metaphor in that. I think in the sense that Nintendo has certainly evolved,” Annie explained.  “It has become a much better and more accessible, and more approachable version of itself. So yeah, that’s a great connection right there."

When it comes to her go-to Mario Kart character, Annie said she goes off an “adorable aesthetic.” She continued, “I’m like a Yoshi and Toad lady. I know that they are not perhaps the strongest contenders, but god, they’re cute!” Annie quickly switched gears and turned into Alexis Rose to answer who the spoiled socialite daughter of Johnny and Moira would pick. “A lot of people would think that it’s kind of like a Princess Peach situation because they kind of look alike. But actually, it’s probably like a Luigi because she actually used to date this fashion designer. He’s an Italian fashion designer named Luigi, and he actually looks quite a lot like the actual character. So it’s just like a nice reminder.”

Annie said that if Alexis played Nintendo, her go-to game would be just like hers in real-life, Just Dance. “I think like me, her go-to game would be Just Dance. But I think we would be playing it for very, very different reasons. I’m playing to have a good laugh at myself and my friends,” she explained. “But I think Alexis would be playing it to demonstrate her incredible choreography, her incredible rhythm, and her massive dance talent. I don’t think many other people would get a turn.” *Cue “A Little Bit Alexis,"* — in fact, Annie said she plans to write a strongly worded letter to have the song included in Just Dance 2022.

We asked Annie if she ever plays virtually with her Schitt’s Creek family (like 50 turns of Mario Party with Dan Levy, perhaps?) and she told us that we just gave her an excellent idea. “OK, you’ve put like a very interesting idea in my head. Until this point, we have not done such a thing. But I think now that I’m in Boston, Noah Reid is in New Mexico, Dan’s in Toronto, Sarah Levy is in LA. I think that now that we’re kind of spread out all over the map this is a very, very good offering that I’m going to go to them with.”

When it comes to the Schitt’s Creek family having a game night, Annie said that David Rose would win whatever game they play. “They would be playing whatever game that David Rose told them that they would be playing. I think maybe a Mario Kart situation but with a lot of very high pitched yelling about how the rest of the Roses are cheating from David Rose,” Annie described. “That’s kind of the picture that I’m envisioning.”

If you're wondering what Annie's go-to gaming snack list includes, she gave us an inside look. "I've been doing red wine recently, just because it's kind of cozier in the winter weather. I've really leaned into Goldfish crackers, and Haribo gummy bears. That's just as a snack, and we would be doing pizza first, or perhaps Indian food, or nachos. It all depends on what mood is striking at that particular time."

Here's hoping that we get an IG Live Mario Party tournament from the Roses in 2021.
