Just put Miley Cyrus in the “Free Britney” camp, because this weekend the “Midnight Sky” singer offered her “love” to the pop princess during her TikTok Tailgate concert before the Super Bowl.
During her rendition of her hit, “Party in the USA,” Miley, who was dressed in a glittery, campy version of a football uniform (accessorized with bangles and a killer pair of pumps), the Hannah Montana star sang the lyrics, “And a Britney song was on,” before ad-libbing, “We love Britney!”
This show of support and affection for the “Toxic” singer comes on the heels of The New York Times releasing a documentary about Britney’s 13-year (and counting) conservatorship, and her legal battle to remove her father Jamie Spears as the manager of her estate. It has since made waves, especially for the way it offers a searing indictment of ex-boyfriend Justin Timberlake’s public words and digs at Britney after their breakup.
That’s not the only instance during her pre-game concert that evoked some major feelings. During her rendition of her mega-smash 2013 ballad, "Wrecking Ball," she got so choked up, she couldn’t get through a huge chunk of the song.
As she managed to eke out a few bars, in between long pauses and sniffles, she said in between notes that it "never gets easier." She then looked as if she could soldier on, but then very quickly broke down and kept her face off to the side of the microphone while her band played on in order to mask the sound of her sobs.

She did manage to compose herself, if only to be brutally honest about where her emotions and heart is at these days. "I wear a lot of glitter and I wear a lot of armour,” she told the crowd of frontline health care workers, “but I also wear my heart on my sleeve, and it gets broken a lot.”
Miley recently separated actor Liam Hemsworth in a very public split, and “Wrecking Ball” was released around the time of their first major breakup before reuniting and tying the knot. After their separation, she dated The Hill’s Kaitlynn Carter for a short time.
She also made sure to note that “Wrecking Ball" is about "feeling completely broken and shattered," thanking the crowd for their kindness, support, and connection to her lyrics.
"Thank you guys," she said. "You guys would know much more about this than me, about medicine, and you know, sometimes we have to take a big spoonful of our own."
All of this praise and emotion clearly left a mark on viewers, because there are now calls on Twitter for her to be the next halftime performer for the 2022 Super Bowl.
Make it happen, NFL!
