Many couples have been forced to postpone their wedding plans due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but Oprah Winfrey swooped in to save Gayle King’s daughter’s special day. Kirby Bumpus tied the knot with longtime boyfriend Virgil Miller at Winfrey’s house in a socially distanced ceremony in December.

King announced the news on CBS This Morning on Monday. She said that she’s been wanting to share the exciting news since December, and she is “over the moon” for her daughter.

“Kirby really is so happy, and nothing beats when your children are happy,” King told Oprah Magazine of her daughter, who got engaged to Miller in February 2019. King noted that their family wasn’t sure how the ceremony would take place because of the restrictions in place due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Luckily for Kirby, her (fairy) godmother, Winfrey invited them to use her Santa Barbara home for the wedding. The small ceremony’s guest list included Winfrey, her partner Stedman Graham, King, and Kirby’s brother Will, who officiated the ceremony. “Nobody knows Kirby the way her brother does, so for him to do the ceremony felt meant to be,” King told the publication.

Of course, getting married at Winfrey’s house has its own perks. Kirby’s wedding photos were taken by photographer Joe Pugliese, who King said "doesn’t normally do weddings” (true, he normally does celebrity magazine spreads). Kirby was in luck because her godmother was shooting something on her property that got cancelled last minute, and King said they "had a professional photographer who followed all pandemic protocol.” She added, “I’m so glad we have those memories because the photos are stunning.”

King shared photos of Kirby and Miller from the magical ceremony on Instagram. “FINALLY fav daughter @kirbybump gave me permission to share the news she’s a married lady.. she & Virgil Miller tied the knot in super small service(6 people) @oprah house in December,” King captioned the photo. She also noted that the “strict covid rules” meant she couldn’t even hug her daughter on her wedding day, admitting that it was tough to obey those rules.

Her caption continued, “Not the wedding we planned in 2020, but my favourite son @willgb3 performed the ceremony... the day was gorgeous, and so was Kirby! I call that perfection.” King also sent a call out for tips on “being a good mother-in-law.”

After Kirby and Miller exchanged vows, guests enjoyed a small wedding reception that included “socially distant hors d’oeuvres and cake, and socially distant dancing.”

“My son, Will, says, ‘We call ourselves a tripod, and that day with Virgil, we became a perfect square,’" King shared. We're not crying, you are!

Congratulations to the happy couple!
