Ahead of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris's inauguration Wednesday, Lady Gaga shared her prayer for a day of peace for the event. Mother Monster was one of many A-list performers tapped to ring in the new presidency and she kicked off the televised event with the American national anthem. Moments before her performance, Gaga tweeted it was her honour to perform as part of "a ceremony, a transition, a moment of change."
She took the stage in gorgeous Gaga fashion decked out in a custom Schiaparelli Couture gown for the occasion. She also sang with a golden mic, because of course she did.
The day before her performance, Gaga was already in Washington to rehearse for the historic event and took time to meet with the troops and share her hopes for what should be a day of celebration and peace.
She posted a picture of herself on Tuesday standing inside the Capitol Rotunda, which less than two weeks ago was under siege by terrorists who rioted for hours, destroyed government property, terrorized Senators and left multiple people dead. The Oscar winner's serene image of herself bowing her head in prayer was a stark juxtaposition to the images of violence and white privilege that have been dominating news cycles since the riot on January 6.
“I pray tomorrow will be a day of peace for all Americans,” wrote Gaga in the caption. “A day for love, not hatred. A day for acceptance not fear. A day for dreaming of our future joy as a country. A dream that is non-violent, a dream that provides safety for our souls. Love, from the Capitol.” Gaga ended the post with an emoji of the American flag.
Gaga worked with Givenchy’s new creative director Matthew Williams for her all-white ensemble, a colour that was chosen for its history with the suffragette movement. It’s also the same colour as the suit incoming Vice President Kamala Harris wore only hours after being announced as the first female, first Black and first South Asian vice president of the United States. But not the last.
According to Vogue, Williams liked that the colour white represented a fresh start, which is exactly what the United States needs after four violent and divisive years under Trump. Williams also designed Gaga’s chunky lock necklace, which was inspired by the locks that tourists and Parisians often affix to Le Pont des Arts as a symbol of everlasting love.
During her visit to the Capitol building, Gaga also spent time with members of the National Guard, who have been dispersed in the thousands to Washington to help ensure a safe and nonviolent inaugural event and transition of power.
Gaga has been a longtime supporter of the former vice president, and performed at his rallies in Pennsylvania last year.
Following Biden and Harris’s historic win, Gaga posted a tearful video on her Instagram account congratulating the incoming president and vice president and celebrating an administration that values science, peace and human life.
In addition to Gaga, Biden’s inauguration line-up includes performances by Jennifer Lopez, Garth Brooks and Bruce Springsteen. Later in the evening, the television event Celebrating America will be hosted by Tom Hanks, Kerry Washington and Eva Longoria. The event will highlight stories of young people making a positive impact in their communities and include performances by Springsteen, as well as John Legend, Demi Lovato, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Jon Bon Jovi, Justin Timberlake, Foo Fighters, Ant Clemons, Tim McGraw and Tyler Hubbard.
