Diane von Furstenberg always celebrates her birthday in style — it should be illegal if a legendary designer doesn’t. The inventor of her iconic wrap dress turned 74 on December 31, and she wanted to encourage others to “own” their age with a powerful mirror selfie.
On Sunday, von Furstenberg showed off her body in a swimsuit while celebrating her recent birthday on a yacht and captioned it the post, “Am I crazy to post this ? Own your age ....it’s a proof you have lived ! Love to everyone.”
Many of her celeb friends commented on the powerful selfie. Kris Jenner wrote “Beautiful !!!!!” and actress Kate Bosworth echoed mama Kardashian’s message. Italian fashion designer Giambattista Valli said that Furstenberg looks “fabulous as always,” and Rachel Zoe wrote, “Queen for life.” Nina Garcia, editor-in-chief of Elle, added, “Owning it! On top as always showing how it’s done.”
The fashion icon continues to inspire women with more than just the wrap dress. In March 2020, on the heels of International Women’s Day, von Furstenberg launched her InCharge with DVF podcast on Spotify. It includes intimate conversations with her guests, including Anita Hill, Kris Jenner, Karlie Kloss, Priyanka Chopra Jonas and more. During the podcast von Furstenberg and her guests discuss the importance of having the strength to fight and the courage to survive. The podcast is an opportunity for listeners to be inspired by other’s journeys in life.

“I am someone who really loves intimacy and love,” von Furstenberg said at the time. “I don't like small talk. I love intimate conversations where you really speak about meaningful things and the journey of your life and survival. I love voices in so many ways. I wanted to do these intimate conversations about the journey of life and survival.” She added that the InCharge message is “a very powerful message and said that “strength is inside everyone.” Her podcast is a way to help others “push the button for the strength to come out.”
The 74-year-old designer also launched the #InCharge initiative with Amazon during Women’s History Month last year. The collaboration works to promote women-owned businesses. Amazon launched the #InCharge page where shoppers can read stories of inspiring female business owners and purchase their products.
“The #InCharge movement is a platform, a place to rally, to use our individual connections to help all women be the women they want to be,” von Furstenberg said of the partnership. “And so I thought it would be fun to work with Amazon which is such a huge platform to expose people to the inspiring stories of women in charge that have started businesses and seen significant success, [in part] thanks to Amazon.”
The designer has helped us start this year off with an inspiring message so let's keep this women empowerment going. Own your age, own your body and live your truth all 2021.
