Katie Holmes finally opens up about the period after she left Tom Cruise

Katie Holmes may be one of the most recognizable faces in Hollywood (or, these days, New York), but that doesn’t mean she’s always tried to live her life in the spotlight. If anything the 41-year-old has been fiercely private about her personal life, which probably just makes her fans crave even more—especially since Holmes grew up in the spotlight and was in one of the most intense celebrity relationships of all time (oh hi there, Tom Cruise).

Well Holmes is finally giving her fans what they want by opening up in a new interview with InStyle. Although the actress never addresses her ex-husband or Scientology directly, she does talk about the period in her life after she left Cruise and moved to New York with their daughter, Suri. According to her, it was an overwhelming situation but random kindness is what got her through.

“That time was intense. It was a lot of attention, and I had a little child on top of it,” she told the publication. “We had some funny moments out and about in public. So many people I didn't know became my friends and helped us out, and that's what I love about the city. There was one incredible moment when I think I actually cried. Suri was six or seven, and she was spending the night at a friend's house while I was seeing the ballet at Lincoln Center. At 10 o'clock I got a call: ‘Mommy, can you come get me?’ I got a cab and went down to Battery Park to pick her up. She was exhausted. She fell asleep on the way home, and when we pulled up to our building, the cab driver opened the door and helped me not wake her. He helped carry her to the building. He was so kind.

”In the interview, Holmes also opened up about learning to find herself at 40, and discussed the long road to getting her latest passion project, Rare Objects, financed. She also talked about Suri, who is about to turn 14 years old in April, revealing that her daughter has “always been a strong personality.”

“We've gotten through the sort of girlie stage,” Holmes revealed. “I feel like I can be more creative and have more time, have my voice. It's sort of, like, just put your stuff out there and be yourself. It takes a while to be comfortable, though.”

Holmes has never really opened up about her separation from Cruise, whom she began dating in 2005 (Tom made things super official that May when he jumped on Oprah’s couch). They married a year later, seven months after they had Suri, and then they divorced six years after that in August 2012. Prior to Cruise, Holmes had been romantically linked to Joshua Jackson and Chris Klein (the pair were engaged from 2002-05).

Shortly after her divorce, Holmes was rumoured to be dating Jamie Foxx, rumours that were basically confirmed when they started stepping out together at the rare event or two, but that relationship ended in 2018 much to the disappointment of KatFoxx fans everywhere.

As for Cruise, he was married twice before Holmes: to Mimi Rogers from 1987 to 1990 and to Nicole Kidman from 1990 to 2001. He also had a high-profile relationship with Penelope Cruz in between relationships with Kidman and Holmes. Following his separation from Holmes there have been many rumoured relationships, including one with fellow Scientologist and Handmaid’s Tale star Elisabeth Moss, but none of them have ever been confirmed.

“I always wanted adventure, and I got it. And I'm still on one,” Holmes said in the interview. “In life you're supposed to have joy, pain, loss, calm. We're not supposed to say, ‘If I could go back, I would want everything joyful,’ because it's not going to happen. That's life. Nobody gets off free, and you're not supposed to. Because then you're going to miss things.”
